CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTE

Spyros Kouvaras comes from the tradition of contemporary dance in France and brings a relaxed mood of his body into rhythms and frequencies of a repetition that hypnotizes and awakens at the same time. His performance, relates the body with time and space as a process of consciousness and exploration. The de-implementation of his art, carries the concept of body and its presence from form to perform, from presentation to representation. The body expands as a multiple «post-text» which is moving in the space and has undergone suppression, hypnosis, agitation, awakening, transformation and denaturation. The performer, through his movements and immobilities, creates a vibrated spatial silence and reconstructs the narrative, showing us the body as a mean of knowledge. «MemOria futUra» is a political, social, and mystical field, which talks to here and now as an acceptance for the coexistence of the ego and the other, as an ongoing process of self-understanding. Spyros Kouvaras creates a field with a free plan view and fluidity in his structure and finally his body, as a narrative curve that is refracted to objects he uses, transforms dance in a choreographic object. In my thought comes an extract from the «Keeper of flocks» by Fernando Pessoa:

I’m a flock keeper
The flock is my thoughts
and my thoughts are all senses
I think with my eyes and ears
and with my hands and feet
and with my nose and mouth

ABSTRACT

A hypnotic metamorphosis

Spyros Kouvaras, curated by Adonis Volanakis, performs «memOria futUra», a 90 minutes, solo choreography which starts from dance and balances in the limits between performance art and visual installation. In a hotel room that functions as a catalyst and endoscopic meditation, a (post) human body creates an heterochronic, choreographic condition which swings between reality and illusion. The objects of the space become the limit and the mirror of our individual and collective memory and the performer seems to be on a lasting journey to a pilgrimage without destination. The movement, through its repeatability and rhythmic interchanges (between speed and slowness), causes a space opening, cultivating an internal, subjective flow of the sense of time which presents a reflective experience to the audience. The choreographer/performer tells us: «The past is transformed» and through the choreography and a subjective dimension of futurology progressively is revealed. The performance its-self, seeks to activate these delays. It differentiates and unites, it flows and stabilizes, unfolds and encompasses instant flares and fragments. Presences and absences, images and fantasies of the past and the future create in some way a «living present» which begins to vibrate under its own terms.
