 CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTE

Examining memory and its mechanisms, I do not try to mention the history but instead I am interested to interact and engage critically with it. I am therefore interested in the approach to the concept of historicity as something that is constantly changing depending on the subject and the conditions under which it is activated. My purpose is to place these bodies, these figures, as invaders in the archeological site of Delphi and through the interaction of movement, image and sound, to cause a spatial vibration, a reinterpretation of the monumental space and a reconnection with the contemporary body and the wider environment. Thus, a form of “living present” emerges which, while not distinguished by any clear temporality, enjoys internal differentiation and seems to be at the same time stationary and flowing according to phenomenological terms.

ABSTRACT

Drawing material by “Nomadic Thought” of Gilles Delleuze and his theory of deterritorialization and also inspired by the Palestinian liberation struggle, the choreographer Spyros Kouvaras, with his new work, “RIZOMA [Requiem for the non-place]”, creates a perforated space-time palimpsest for the Archaeological Site of Delphi in Greece. In a post-apocalyptic environment, in which elements of primitiveness, memory and fantasy interact, the choreographer approaches the body not as a prisoner of the place where he lives but as a nomad wandering between ideas. The choreography, through its “symbiosis” with the archaeological site, creates a new landmark in the area of Delphi and gradually cultivates a fragmented image of the body which functions as a parallel, emotional, load. The set design and the musical composition create an opening of the monumental place and present during the performance an internal, subjective flow of the sense of time to the audience. This timeless shift that takes place, activates in a way, a new, second flow inside the consciousness, penetrating into the depths of the memory and the imagination of the audience. The dance vocabulary causes a kinetic vibration in the natural landscape, while the four performers, as “wandering planets”, in a journey without beginning and end, seem disconnected from all forms of temporality within space. Lost origin, rootstock impossible, submerged memory, present in pending…
